2011 Fall Author Event - Geraldine Brooks

The Foundation is pleased to announce that our 2011 Fall Author will be Pulitzer Prize Winner Geraldine Brooks. The event will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011.

Geraldine Brooks

 Geraldine Brooks was born and raised in Sydney, Australia.  She attended Columbia University's Graduate school of Journalism. She eventually became The Wall Street Journal’s, Middle East bureau chief. She spent six years there covering regional conflicts, including the first Gulf War, and wrote her first book of non-fiction, Nine Parts of Desire, The Hidden World of Islamic Women, which was published in 1994. Later, as the Wall Street Journal's UN Correspondent, she covered conflicts in Bosnia, Somalia, and Nigeria.
  In 1995 she wrote a memoir, Foreign Correspondence, which chronicles a childhood enriched by penpals from around the world, and her adult quest to find them. Her first novel, Year of Wonders, published in 2001, was inspired by the true story of Eyam, Derbyshire, where villagers voluntarily quarantined themselves when plague struck in 1665. Her second novel, March, a retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved classic Little Women from the point of view of Mr. March, the absent father, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2006.  Her most recent novel, People of the Book, has been translated into more than 20 languages and was an instant New York Times bestseller. Actress Catherine Zeta Jones has acquired the film rights for the story. Her latest book, Caleb’s Crossing is scheduled to come out in May of 2011.
  She lives on Martha's Vineyard with her husband Tony Horwitz, also a Pulitzer Prize winner, their sons, Nathaniel and Bizuayehu, and two dogs.

2010 Fall Author Event - Daniel Handler
The 2010 Fall Author Event with Daniel Handler, was held on November 10, 2010 at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center. Mr. Handler spoke to a sold out crowd. Mr. Handler is the author of the acclaimed Lemony Snicket's “Series of Unfortunate Events” books which were also adapted into a Hollywood movie starring Jim Carrey.
