Celebrate Shakespeare ($1,200) In partnership with WSU Friends of the Stewart Library, the Foundation sponsors the “Shakespeare in the Schools” traveling troupe from Southern Utah University each spring near Shakespeare’s birthday.  The program includes a teacher in-service session, a performance for secondary students, drama workshops, and an evening community performance.

Elementary Middle School Visiting Author ($1,000) Students in selected elementary grades have the opportunity once or twice each year to interact with a prominent children’s author.  Deseret Book usually provides funding for the author’s fee, and the Foundation supplies copies of the author’s books to familiarize students with his/her writing prior to the event.

Elementary Science Programs ($10,000) Three interactive science programs are rotated among the elementary schools each year: The Hansen Planetarium Astro Van includes assemblies, classroom visits, rocket launches and evening star-gazing sessions with topics centered on astronomy and space.  The Living Planet Aquarium Rain Forest Van provides educational “safaris” on rain forest conservation and wildlife, complete with live jungle animals.  Utah State Jr. Engineering transports engineering, science, and technology into the schools and emphasizes the importance of math and science as problem solving devices and future career choices.

Focus on Excellence Awards ($1,000) Principals are encouraged to nominate faculty and staff members who carry out the objectives of the District’s mission statement in an exemplary way.  A Foundation board member presents a cash award of $50 to each of the 20 Focus on Excellence recipients in school board meeting throughout the year.

High School Visiting Authors ($1,000) Working in partnership with Weber State University, the Foundation sponsors workshops with well-known authors for high school English classes.  Students have the opportunity to read the author’s work and then interact with him/her during the presentation.

Incentives for Excellence Grants ($60,000) All schools in the district may apply for a yearly grant of up to $4,000 for elementaries and $6,000 to fund school-wide projects that enhance educational excellence.  Schools are strongly encouraged to supply matching funds, thus doubling available resources.  The Foundation grants committee evaluates and fills the requests on the basis of (a) match with Foundation and District missions; (b) tie-in to school improvement plans; and (c) number of students impacted.

Major Grant Project ($100,000) The Foundation sponsors a district-wide project annually in the areas of literacy, the arts, match and science, or technology.  Past projects include media center upgrades, math calculators, high school band uniforms, secondary school musical instruments, and Learning Centers.

Middle School Visiting Author ($1,000) Middle school students have the opportunity each year to interact with a prominent author.  Deseret Book usually provides funding for the author’s fee, and the Foundation supplies copies of the author’s books to familiarize students with his/her writing prior to the event.

Mini Grant Program ($100,000) Teachers may request an annual grant of up to $500 to help them develop special projects and innovative programs for their students.  The Foundation grant committee evaluates the requests according to the extent they will enhance education within the classroom and funds over 300 mini grants each year.

Reflections Awards for Student Winners ($1,000) The two PTA councils in the district sponsor the annual Reflections contest in each of the schools to encourage creative writing and visual arts.  Winners from the schools compete at the council level; council winners receive a cash award and compete on the national level.
