International Baccalaureate

IB MISSION

To develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

There are four key components to the IB Program:

1. ACADEMIC RIGOR Students learn how to learn, analyze, and reach considered conclusions about the world.
2. COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM Students study six subject areas including language, foreign language, individuals & societies, experimental sciences, mathematics and the arts.
3. GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Students are encouraged to think globally, and the curriculum is based on international standards.
4. Growing Independent Learners Students set seven specific goals linked to the IB Learner profile. They plan and implement projects designed to encourage service learning and personal growth.

Many universities throughout the world recognize IB diplomas with entry level university credits including prestigious national universities such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford as well as Utah’s local universities listed below:

AM I AN IB STUDENT?

Successful IB students are eager and passionate about learning. The most successful students aren’t always the smartest, but they are the students that stick with it and work hard. IB students are self-motivated, organized, capable of meeting deadlines and have a GPA of 3.5 or above. IB students have also taken AP and honors courses prior to joining the IB program. We also encourage students to take the Avid elective course where/when available.

HOW DO I EARN THE IB DIPLOMA?

An IB Diploma is awarded to students who pass internally and externally assessed exams in the six academic areas, and is in addition to your Ogden High diploma. Students must also complete a course of study in Theory of Knowledge (similar to a philosophy course), and write an Extended Essay reflecting independent research and analysis in an area of their choice. Students will also set goals and participate in service learning through the Creativity, Action and Service component.

Can I participate in sports, theater and other extracurricular activities?

Absolutely! Our IB students participate in a variety of sports, both in District and club or traveling teams. We have Student Body Officers, dancers, cheerleaders, club leaders, competitive hockey and soccer players. IB students are very involved in their school and local community.

CAN I TAKE IB COURSES WITHOUT ENROLLING IN THE DIPLOMA PROGRAM?

We encourage students to participate in the full IB Diploma Program or take AP classes – not both. Because IB courses are two years long (junior and senior year) and are only assessed at the end of your senior year, students can potentially earn more college credit through AP and concurrent enrollment classes. By only take one or two IB Courses students also miss out on the full benefits of the cohesive and comprehensive nature of the IB curriculum. In rare cases, students will take a few IB courses and not participate in the full IB Diploma Program.

HOW DO STUDENTS APPLY?

The IB Program, while demanding, is open to any student. We start our recruitment in the 9th grade year at the junior highs, though students can get involved up until the start of their junior year. OHS offers a pre-IB 10 th grade advisory and a pre-IB 10th grade Avid elective course. It is encouraged, though not required, to participate in these classes. These classes will introduce students to the IB curriculum and philosophy. Students will also learn important time management skills, organizational strategies and study skills that will be crucial to success in the IB Diploma Program. These 10 th grade courses are not a commitment to enrolling in the IB program, as students will still be required to complete an application during registration sophomore year. 3. Ogden High IB graduates are excited about college and are accepted into competitive programs.

-Students have been accepted to the following schools: NYU Abu Dahbi, Johns Hopkins, BYU, BYUI,
Stanford, Oregon State, University of Utah - Honors College, Colorado College of Mines - Honors
College, Westminster College, Smith College, Traineeship with New York Joffrey Ballet AND MORE!

-ACT Scores range 17-36. The average ACT score is 25 compared to the State average of 20 and National
Average of 21.
-Nearly all IB students earn some university credit

4. The comprehensive curriculum creates well rounded and academically competitive students

-2016 cohort of 23 students earned $1.07 million in scholarship offers

-2017 cohort of 27 students earned $982,824 in scholarship offers
