students winners with Sy Montgomery

Every year, our students have a chance to compete in a writing contest as part of the Fall Author Event. The theme this year was “Teachers are Everywhere,” and 5th and 6th-grade students were prompted to choose an interesting creature to learn about, then write a short story that weaves in fun facts about the animal and something we can learn from it. We received over 250 submissions, ranging from nonfiction pieces that shared fascinating facts, to creative first-person fiction stories told from a creature’s perspective, and even a poem about hummingbirds! Our student winners were honored at both the gala event and, met privately with Ms. Montgomery before the student assembly, and received a signed copy of Ms. Montgomery's book Becoming a Good Creature and a $100 cash prize.

Congratulations to our 2025 winners: Wisdom Barnes, Jonah Bute, Nora Crowton, Leilani Robles Cruz, Nora Hein, Freya Kavanagh, Amber Larberg, Estevan Nava Lopez, Tessa Lynch, and Andee Nolan
